From the Cohorts
All notes are from participants who completed one of our reading programmes. Names and identifying details are published with permission.
"I came into the estate planning programme not knowing what an LPA actually was. By the third session I was asking the kind of questions I hadn't known to ask before. The reading binder is still on my desk."
"The balance sheet workshop was compact and to the point. I went in thinking I already understood household finances reasonably well. I left with a clearer map of where my thinking had been loose. The spreadsheet template was a practical bonus."
"I appreciated that no one tried to sell us anything. The facilitator would pose a question, let us discuss, and then move us on. It felt like a proper reading group, not a seminar with a hidden agenda. I've since joined the estate planning cohort as well."
"The glossary cards were more useful than I expected. I found myself using them when I had a conversation with my solicitor the following month — I could actually follow what he was saying and ask better questions."
"The retirement overview was a solid starting point. As someone with a financial background I already knew some of the CPF framework, but the SRS section clarified a few things I'd been fuzzy on. It's a good programme to do before a more detailed conversation with a professional."
"My husband and I both did the balance sheet workshop. We came away with a much cleaner understanding of where our household stood and what questions to bring to our bank. The reflection circle a few weeks later was an unexpected and welcome addition."
Three Cohort Stories
A 56-year-old participant with two adult children needed to understand the difference between a will and a CPF nomination — and why both matter. She had been told by a friend that they were the same thing.
Over ten evening sessions, she worked through the material on CPF nominations, will structures, and LPA documentation. The glossary cards went home with her each week; she brought questions to the following session.
By the end of the programme, she had a clear working understanding of how the two interact — and the vocabulary to discuss her specific situation with her solicitor. She made her appointment the week after the final session.
"I had no idea CPF nominations bypass the will entirely. That one fact changed how I needed to think about everything."
A couple in their late forties, both working, were approaching a decision about whether to downsize their property. They had no shared framework for reviewing their household balance sheet together.
Both joined the weekend workshop. Working through the structured workbook together gave them a common vocabulary for their household discussions. The reflection circle a fortnight later let them return with questions that had emerged in the interval.
They left the reflection circle with a clearer list of questions to bring to their bank and their property agent — and, as they described it, a shared language for conversations they'd been avoiding.
"We'd been talking around the property question for two years. The workshop gave us a structure for the conversation."
A 51-year-old participant was approaching the age at which she would begin receiving CPF correspondence about her Retirement Account. She found the letters hard to follow and was unsure what decisions, if any, were ahead of her.
The two-session retirement overview covered the CPF Life structure and Retirement Account formation in detail. The vocabulary booklet gave her a reference she could hold up against the CPF correspondence at home.
She was able to read and understand the next CPF letter she received without needing to call the CPF hotline. She described this as a small but meaningful change to her sense of confidence with financial correspondence.
"I used to just file the CPF letters because I didn't know what to make of them. Now I actually read them."
